When we talk about British Classic Sports Cars we have to mention MG Car Company as one of the most popular British classic cars ever. MG was founded in 1924 by Cecil Kimber and he chose the name MG inspired by the name of Morris Garages, were he used to work.
MG’s First Cars
The first car manufactured by MG Car Company Limited was the MG 14/28 in 1924. The MG 14/28 was a Sports Car with a 1802 cc engine, four cylinders and a three-speed manual transmission. In 1927 the MG 14/28 was replaced by a very similar model, the MG 14/40. One of the main differences between the two models was that the 14/40 was the first MG car that carried the MG Octagon badge on its radiator.
In 1955 MG launched the MG MGA at the Frankfurt Motor Show, changing the look of the car completely. This classic sports car sold 101,081 units until its last production in July 1962, breaking the car exportation record of any previous British car. MG exported 95,212 MGAs The first MGA model on the market was the MG A 1500 with a 72 hp B-Series 1489cc engine. This model was produced up to 1959. The MG A Twin Cam appeared in 1958 with a bigger engine, 1588 cc B-Series DOHC of 108 hp. In 1960 British Motor Corporation stopped producing this model. In 1959, MG manufactured the MG A 1600 with a 1588cc engine and the MG A 1600 Mark II in 1960 with a powerful 1622cc engine. The 1600 Mark II was produced until 1962.
